So…that/ Too…to/ Such … that

Too .. to

We use 'too' with an adjective or adverb and 'to' followed by a verb.
ในการเปรียบเทียบโดยใช้ ‘too’ … ‘to’ มีหลักการดังนี้
1. เราใช้ ‘too’ กับ adjective หรือ adverb
2. คำตามหลัง ‘to’ จะต้องเป็น verb

ดังตัวอย่างต่อไปนี้

Too + adjective/adverb + to + verb

For example:

She is too young to be on her own.
= She cannot live by herself because she is too young.
เธอยังเด็กเกินกว่าที่จะอยู่ตามลำพังได้

It is too far to walk.

= We cannot walk there because it is too far.
มันไกลเกินกว่าที่เราจะเดินไปได้

The box is too heavy to carry.

= We cannot carry the box because it is too heavy.
กล่องหนักเกินกว่าที่เราจะถือมันได้

So ..that

We use ‘so’ with adjectives and a clause (subject + verb) to follow ‘that’. Normally the subject of the clause is not the same as the subject of the sentence.

ในการเปรียบเทียบโดยใช้ so .. that มีหลักการดังต่อไปนี้

1. เราใช้ ‘so’ กับ adjective หรือ adverb
2. ตามหลัง ‘that’ คือ วลีที่ประกอบไปด้วย ประธาน + กริยา

ดังตัวอย่างต่อไปนี้

So + adjective/adverb + that + Clause

For example:

She is so young that her mother won't let her go out on her own.

เธอยังเด็กมากดังนั้นแม่ของเธอจึงไม่อนุญาติให้เธอออกไปไหนเพียงลำพัง

Your house is so far away from here that we can't walk there.

บ้านของเธออยู่ไกลจากที่นี่มากดังนั้นเราจึงไม่สามารถเดินไปที่นั่นได้

This box is so heavy that we can't take it with us.

กล่องใบนี้หนักมากดังนั้นเราจึงไม่สามารถนำมันไปกับเราได้

Lyn runs so quickly that no one can catch up with her.

ลินวิ่งเร็วมากดังนั้นเราจึงวิ่งตามเธอไม่ทัน

“Such that”

We use ‘such that’ to emphasize on the [adjective + noun] in the CAUSE clause.

ในการเปรียบเทียบโดยใช้ ‘such that’ แตกต่างจากการใช้ ‘so .. that’ ดังนี้
1. โครงสร้างของ so .. that = So + adjective/adverb + that + Clause
2. โครงสร้างของ Such that = Such + adjective + noun+ that + clause
ดังตัวอย่างต่อไปนี้

It was such a beautiful storm that we watched it all night.

มันช่างเป็นพายุที่สวยงามจนทำให้เราต้องอยู่มองมันทั้งคืน
We learnt such an interesting lesson that we wanted to read more.
