Sentence Structures
- ประโยคความเดียว (Simple Sentence) คือประโยคที่ประกอบด้วยประโยคอิสระประโยคเดียว มีประธานและกริยาตัวเดียว อาจมีส่วนเติมเต็มได้ ตัวอย่างเช่น
Mary plays the guitar.
Smoking is no longer legal in many public places.
Some children are afraid of ghosts.
There are a lot of people on the street.
The games have become politically important. - ประโยคความรวม (Compound Sentence) คือประโยค ที่ประกอบด้วยประโยคอิสระตั้งแต่สองประโยคขึ้นไปมาเชื่อมกันด้วยคำสันธานหรือ คำเชื่อม คำเชื่อมที่ใช้ในการเชื่อมประโยคความรวมนั้น ก็มีอยู่หลากหลายคำด้วยกัน ยกตัวอย่าง เช่น คำว่า and, not only….but also, in addition, besides, in the same way จะใช้ในประโยคที่คล้อยไปในทางเดียวกัน คำว่า but, nor, in contrast, neither nor จะใช้ในการเชื่อมประโยคที่มีความหมายตรงข้ามกัน คำว่า because และ for instance ใช้ในการเชื่อมประโยคเพื่อบอกเหตุผลหรือยกตัวอย่างเพิ่มเติม นอกจากนี้แล้ว ยังมีคำเชื่อมอื่นๆ อีกมากมาย เช่น for, or, so, yet, however, therefore, otherwise, consequently เป็นต้น ตัวอย่างเช่น
During the school year, students go to lectures or they study by themselves. Sometimes they cross a street, and a police officer gives them a ticket.
The games can be seen by nearly every country in the world and are therefore an ideal platform for political statements. - ประโยคความซ้อน (Complex Sentence) คือ ประโยคที่ประกอบด้วยหนึ่งประโยคที่สมบูรณ์ ที่เรียกว่า Independent clause และอนุประโยคที่นำหน้าด้วยคำแทนบุคคล สิ่งของ สถานที่ เวลาหรือการกระทำที่เป็นประธานของประโยคหลักซึ่งเมื่อแยกออกแล้วไม่ได้ความหมายที่สมบูรณ์ เรียกอนุประโยคนี้ว่า dependent clause กล่าวคือ นำหน้าด้วย Relative pronoun เช่น that, which, who, while, what, when เป็นต้น ตัวอย่างเช่น
Astronomers are scientists who study the stars.
In 1984 some countries decided not to send teams to the Los Angeles Games because they felt that there was not enough security and that they were too commercial - ประโยคความผสม (Compound-Complex Sentence)
คือประโยคผสมระหว่างประโยคความรวมกับประโยคความซ้อน ตัวอย่างเช่น
Before Galileo was born, the Polish astronomer Copernicus published a book advancing the theory that the earth and the planets went round the sun. The Church condemned this and in 1600 they burnt a man called Giordano Bruno who said that he agreed with Copernicus.
