การเรียนรู้เพื่อเดาความหมายของคำที่เราไม่รู้ เป็นทักษะที่สำคัญ เพื่อไม่ต้องค้นหาคำทุกคำจากพจนานุกรม เราสามารถเรียนรู้ที่จะเดาความหมายจากคำจากประโยคได้
ในการค้นหาความหมายของคำเพื่อเดาความหมายของคำที่บอกเป็นนัยจากบริบท มีขั้นตอนดังต่อไปนี้
คำในภาษาอังกฤษมีส่วนประกอบอยู่ 3 ส่วนคือคือรากคำ, ส่วนนำหน้าคำ และส่วนท้าย
รากคำ คือส่วนที่แสดงความหมายของคำและเป็นส่วนประกอบพื้นฐานของคำ
ส่วนนำหน้าคำ คือส่วนที่อยู่หน้ารากคำ และทำให้ความหมายของคำเปลี่ยนไป หรือเปลี่ยนเป็นคำใหม่
ส่วนท้ายคำ คือส่วนที่อยู่หลังรากคำ ส่วนท้ายคำเปลี่ยนความหมายของคำและหน้าที่ของคำ
ส่วนนำหน้าคำและส่วนท้ายคำ เรียกว่า affix (คำเติม)
